AZ DAILY STAR: "Tim Steller's column: Nanos' anger arises as Pima County sheriff campaign issue"
This week we thank Tim Steller for joining us at our Press Event last week where we called out Chris Nanos for his pattern of retaliation. Tim Steller wrote a factual and scathing article this week documenting how Chris Nanos runs his office through intimidation and retaliation. Here are some excerpts:
"Most often, they say, the retaliation went against employees of the department, often through transferring them to shifts or jobs they don't want.
Nanos, in an interview Friday, acknowledged his threat to pull deputies from the board meetings resulted from that item being put on the board's agenda."
"Among those speaking out against Nanos on these grounds now is his one-time chief deputy, Rick Kastigar, who left in March 2023 after 46 years in the department. The two of them had worked together for decades when Nanos asked Kastigar to serve as chief deputy in the current term, beginning January 2021.
"I learned within a couple of months, he would become a tyrant, a micromanager, and one of the most vindictive individuals I have ever encountered as a boss," Kastigar told me Thursday.
He likened working for Nanos to being in a family with domestic violence. In the case of Nanos, Kastigar said, it's metaphorical violence, verbal attacks.
"He will beat you up, beat you down, then apologize and expect you to be loyal," Kastigar said.
Kastigar left, he said, after intervening in what he called "a red-faced, sweat on the brow, profane rant" against another chief.
"As I attempted to calm this down, Chris turned on me and effectively ordered me out of the building." "
"The idea that Nanos retaliates, intimidates and employs favoritism based on loyalty was one of the themes of a press conference held Tuesday by supporters of his challenger, sheriff's department Lt. Heather Lappin.
Sgt. Aaron Cross, who is president of the Pima County Deputies Organization, appeared at the press conference and in a later interview related how he thinks he was a victim. The union he heads opposes Nanos and supports Lappin, whereas a competing union, the Pima County Deputy Sheriffs Association, supports Nanos."
"Of the four Democrats on the Pima County Board of Supervisors, only one has announced his support for Nanos — Rex Scott. Part of Scott's reasoning, he said, is that he won't vote for any Republican who doesn't publicly reject Donald Trump.
Another Democratic Supervisor, Matt Heinz, said he's supporting the Republican, Lappin. "I don’t think he’s fit for the position. That’s why I’m supporting someone who is," Heinz said.
The other two Democratic supervisors, Adelita Grijalva and Sylvia Lee, haven't endorsed either candidate, and neither has Pima County Attorney Laura Conover, also a Democrat, who said she's staying neutral since she must work with whoever is elected.
Getting mad and lashing out, even if the conflicts get worked out later, just isn't a great way of working with people."

WILL MAYOR AND COUNCIL ENFORCE WASH CAMPING BAN FOR HUMAN SAFETY?
Mayor and Council will decide whether to ban Camping in Washes in the City of Tucson. This is likely a response to the Lawsuit over the Navajo Wash which is currently under appeal. Several people have died in washes during monsoon season over the last few years, yet Mayor and City Council turn a blind-eye to enforcing the existing law. Sept 25, they will consider implementing a new BAN, but will they enforce a new law or is it "window-dressing"
TCFC Interviewed Adrian Wurr who filed the lawsuit against the City of Tucson and lives across and maintains the Navajo Wash property.

“PARK CLEANUP: The City of Tucson has closed Santa Rita Park to clear out homeless encampments. A spokesperson says there is drug paraphernalia, human waste and a dead dog found today.” A quote from Channel 4 twitter. I must say, City leaders have already conditioned me to accept the human waste and drug paraphernalia. That’s what they want, all of us to live in conditions unfit for anyone while they eat up their pay raise. But the dead dog? I must admit, I’m not yet conditioned for this. Wherever these camps get set up, be on the lookout for dead dogs. Are they eating them?
Nanos is not old school. Nanos fits it just right with the current regime. If he was old school, he would have sought prosecution of the Mayor when she used city money to hang banners on our city buildings. I’m conditioned to accept this as well. Did we ever get paid back for that?
Nanos is so old school. Yell at people and that will motivate them. “The beatings will continue until morale improves!” Nanos is 2 generations behind the curve. Time for new leadership. Time for Nanos to retire.
It’s a simple logic. Washes were made for moving water, not housing. Why don’t they care about safety. We all have to abide by the rules. That’s why we make the rules as we all decided it’s unsafe.
What does it matter if they enforce a wash ban?? It will only spur more homeless to be literally on the streets or in their tent cities. I get that living in the washes can be dangerous, but how much better is it in those horrible camps they have created that the City Leader do NOTHING about. Nothing will change or get better if we don’t vote these people out that have created this crisis.
Mayor and council will not stop the camping in our Tucson washes because they make Federal grant monies from it. They need their yearly head counts to be high as possible. If our Mayor and Council are forced to ban this type of illegal camping then they will have their sycophantic police chief Chad Kasmar not train their officers, only have a couple TPD officers handle this city wide complaints that will equal to non-enforcement or if criminal citations are made the city court personnel (lawyers and judges) will only lightly slap the arrestees hands making it a worthless effort for our officers to care anymore. Vote them all out.
